An afternoon take on Americana classics

September 15, 2010

What do you do when you can’t stay awake when you’re working at your computer all day, reading, writing, thinking, and spacing out? You make yourself an afternoon snack! Here’s an adult take on the Americana snack classics: popcorn and milkshakes!

White Truffle Oil and Sheep’s Cheese Popcorn

Having not broken into the bottle of white truffle infused olive oil from mom, and having been staring at the block of Rosey Sheep soft sheep's cheese in the fridge, I finally caved and made a snack!

Pop your kernels over the stove the old fashioned way in a touch of olive oil and a dash of the truffle oil, then toss popped with truffle oil, grated cheese, and sea salt.

Afternoon Affogato

Affogato means "drowned" in Italian, and that's exactly what is to be done in this perfect pick-me up: drown a cup of vanilla ice cream (preferably gelato, as its greater density helps it to melt slower and causes a dense cloud of goodness) in a dark, heavy hot espresso.

The bitterness of the espresso is a divine counterpoint to the toothsome sweetness of the ice cream. Starbucks Frappachino, you got nothin' on the Italians...
