Having a Portuguese speaker living in your house has its benefits. Some days, you get a song in Portuguese, and if you’re really lucky, it’s on a cool evening by the fire accompanied by the guitar. Some days, you get pie that, when translated into English, is called something like “The breasts of the unknown soldier’s wife” (it involves meringue peaks).     But, has Marta heard of a portagee?

      She has when she met me! A true portagee! She actually commented on this the other night, how I “truly was a portagee” at a music festival we went to, where we finally climbed the hill to our car after 45 minutes of talking * after* all the goodbyes had been said! True portagee??? Undoubtedly.
